Solitary benign schwannoma of the psoas muscle: A case report

Background: Schwannomas of the retroperitoneum may grow very large prior to diagnosis. Neuropathy of the lower extremities also may result. Case Report: A retroperitoneal tumor was found incidentally by computed tomography which was originally performed to evaluate a hepatic tumor in a 57-year-old male. Schwannoma without invasion of surrounding tissue in the right psoas muscle was diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging. Exploratory laparotomy with wide resection of the hepatic tumor and enucleation of the schwannoma was performed. Conclusion: Enucleation is an efficient treatment for schwannomas in the psoas muscle. Prognosis is good since postoperative recurrence is unusual.
