摘要
One of the first problems we encountered when addressing the issue is referred to the name of the artisans working hone industry. We do not know the name by which the Romans referred to the craftsmen of bone and horn, possibly as Seneca said because it is an activity "servile and vulgar". The fact that this activity is not one of the most recurrent themes in the classics, and for references tangentially to some of his tools, does not imply that it is an underdeveloped work. Archaeology gives constant samples, and relatively abundant, the extensive development that took over the Roman Empire. Now, despite being an element that usually appears regularly in most fields, is both one of the least studied artifacts and therefore more unknown. Under these premises, not having as much information as in other craft activities, case, for example, ceramics, studies are still in the early stages, although in recent years it is moving forward thanks to the work being carried out. Investigations are completing the data gaps which we have so far.
