MODELLING OF ANTENNA PATTERN DESCRIPTORS FOR ANTENNA PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

For UWB communications using baseband pulses, standard antenna pattern descriptors such as gain are not sufficient as they do not provide any information on pulse distortion. Thus, new pattern descriptors such as a correlation energy pattern have been proposed. (McLean, 2005) Standard fullwave simulators, however, typically do not yet contain modules for calculation of these parameters. Therefore effective prediction of ultrawideband radiation patterns using standard fullwave simulators have not yet been addressed. This paper presents and compares two methods that can be used to calculate these parameters using standard fullwave simulators. The improved approach has been implemented in the Matlab (TM) environment to process raw data from CST Microstripes (TM). The descriptors were applied on two sample antennas so that their performance could be compared.
