In contrast to earlier reports good linear relationships are shown to exist between experimental diamagnetic susceptibility enhancements for some 50 aromatic and heteroaromatic ring systems and the corresponding resonance energies and/or aromaticity indices. Consequently there is no apparent justification for separate 'classical' and 'magnetic' concepts of aromaticity as earlier proposed. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
