摘要
This lecture looks at the role of the Government in agricultural development in India in different periods, from independence to the period of economic reforms and continuing since. It also highlights the role of the government in solving problems plaguing agriculture such as low profitability, farmer distress, rapid deterioration of land and water holdings etc. The pivotal role assigned to state action in resolving these problems, and measures undertaken by the government on its own and in partnership with other stakeholders has also been touched upon. The lecture clearly brings out the responsibility of the government in enhancing the productivity of agriculture and puts forth various suggestions towards government's interventions for growth of agriculture and enhancement of farmers' welfare.
