摘要
The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the history and processing of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (URMWPE) for surgical implantation. UHMWPE has revolutionized the orthopedic industry by providing an excellent bearing surface for implants used in total joint arthroplasties of the hip. This paper discusses the formation of plastics, the steps taken to process UHMWPE, the wear characteristics of UHMWPE, and alternatives to UHMWPE in bearing surfaces.
