Odour nuisance of projects

Odor nuisance is a matter not yet regulated by law. This causes various issues for investors who are planning projects that may emit odour but even more problems for people who have to stay around such plants. It is possible to determine individual substances that are characterised by an unpleasant odour (e.g. ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, thioalcohol, amines) and the concentration of which in the natural environment is limited by law. However, unpleasant odour, especially in the processes of municipal management or large-scale animal husbandry and breeding, most often comes from many substances (up to several hundred). The determination of individual substances in such cases does not bring any results. However, there is a method of dynamic olfactometry, which allows the determination of odour nuisance in a standardised procedure. It seems advisable to introduce solutions in the Polish legal system, as soon as possible, that would regulate the problem of odor nuisance.
