摘要
"Paintings wither like flowers," Vincent van Gogh already had to realize. He is known to have used pigments and dyes that were not very stable. The article cites examples to describe how chemical reactions and physical influences such as light and heat lead to color changes. With time, the darkening of varnish and the yellowing of oil binders can also significantly alter the original appearance of paintings.
