Republican democracy in the political thought of Mexico and Spain during the 1860s and 1870s: Ignacio Ramirez and Francisco Pi y Margall

This article studies the political thought of Mexico's Ignacio Ramirez and Spain's Fran-cisco Pi y Margall between the late 1850s and early 1880s. Texts by both authors are analysed, understanding them not as theoretical formulations, but as thoughts arising from the events that surrounded the lives of each of them. The objective is, on the one hand, to detect simi-larities and differences between their approaches, and, on the other, to elucidate the extent to which the thought of both men belonged to the political culture known as republican democ-racy that had begun to emerge in public discourse in the mid-nineteenth century.
