Synthesis, characterization, and in vitro bioactivity, mechanical strength of silver doped akermanite bioceramic

摘要
Biomaterials research has grown in recent decades, due to the necessity of organ, tissue, and bone repair. The foremost goal of this work is to prepare silver-doped bioceramic in order to improve the bioactivity and anti-bacterial activity of the material. In the present study akermanite was doped with various Ag+ concentrations (1.5, 3 and 4.5 mol%) and its in vitro biological response was studied. Surface of the scaffolds was completely covered with Hydroxyapatite, indicates that Ag + doping enhanced the HAp deposition during 9 days of im-mersion in SBF medium. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds, comprising 3 and 4.5 mol% of Ag doped akermanite exhibits the greatest compressive strength (127-130 MPa) and young's modulus (2297-2624 MPa) which matches to the strength of cortical bone. The biomineralization studies results indicates akermanite doped with 4.5 mol percent of silver enhances the deposition of hydroxyapatite crystals and mechanical strength of the akermanite. The findings indicate Ag-doped akermanite appear to have significant potential for use in orthopedic applications.
