Nulle part dans la maison de mon pere marks a turning point in the work of Assia Djebar insofar as memory opens up to the most personal part of the self, which-freed from the imposed order-is summoned to show itself. Acoustic acuity is added to that of the gaze when it comes to piercing the infinite space she covets. Dispossessed of all attachment to her father's house, the narrator carries out the definitive attack against what is forbidden to her, and thus claims a place for herself, for her speech, for her body, for her enjoyment, and for her own writing.
