BRAZILIAN RESEARCH ON SIGN LANGUAGES TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING: THE SLTIS IN GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN TRANSLATION STUDIES

The emergence of Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Studies (SLTIS) in recent years has been drive by research on sign language translation and interpreting, and related topics. Considering the development and consolidation of this field, this paper presents a mapping of Brazilian master's and doctoral academic research focused on "translation and translating" or "interpretation and interpreting" from/ between/to sign languages. To do this, a search was carried out in the academic productions of three Brazilian Graduate Programs in Translation Studies at: (1) the Federal University of Santa Catarina (PGET-UFSC); (2) the University of Brasilia (POSTRAD-UnB); and (3) the Federal University of Ceara (POET-UFC). It was identified that, from 2005 to 2022, the programs had the completion of 824 research. Of this total number of research, 129 (15.6%) of them correspond to the selection criteria - of the total of 621 dissertations, 109 (17.4%) of them are within the scope of SLTIS, as well as 20 (9.8%) theses in a total of 203. Therefore, after mapping this academic production, some categorizations and analyses were conducted regarding: the central focus of the research; its temporal distribution; the authorship and profile of the researchers; and the research supervisors. In general, there has been an increase in research within the scope of SLTIS which shows that this field is consolidated, productive, and rapidly rising in Brazil.
