LEO STRAUSS AND THE PROBLEM OF HISTORICISM IN 19TH CENTURY GERMAN PHILOSOPHY

This article seeks to offer an exposition of Leo Strauss's critique of historicism in German philosophy. Leo Strauss was a critic of modern historicism. His thought is an attempt to rehabilitate the classical tradition of natural right. Strauss starts from the idea that only a return to the classical tradition of natural right is capable of offering a solution to the modern relativism that emanates from the historicist view. Finally, we will show how Hegel's philosophy of history can be an antidote against relativism without falling into the need to postulate the idea of a natural right as in Strauss.
