Reproductive risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in women. This Practice Pearl explains how increased awareness of reproductive risk factors for CVD will lead to improving the cardiovascular health of women by using evidence-based CVD risk-reduction prevention strategies. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death for women. Adverse pregnancy outcomes, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm delivery, and low birth weight-affecting up to 30% of pregnant women-increase the risk of CVD. Early menarche and polycystic ovary syndrome are implicated. Premature and early menopause and significant vasomotor symptoms are all associated. Including reproductive risk assessment is critical when determining CVD risk and implementing evidence-based prevention strategies.
