An empirical study of work-related stress and burnout among nurses

摘要
The increasing workload led to the increase in work-related stress among nurses. When job demands are high and work resources are limited, stress will eventually lead to burnout syndromes. The objectives of this study are to determine burnout levels and examine the relationships between work-related stresses and burnout among nurses in a public hospital in Malaysia. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis to derive results for discussions. It was observed that 19 out of 316 respondents have burnout syndromes. The regression analysis results indicated that psychological stress and social stress have significant positive relationships with emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation. Social stress has a significant negative relationship with personal accomplishment. Nurses working on rotating shifts and earning a household income of less than RM4,850 per month are prone to burnout syndromes. Strategies are required to build a resilient team in fighting against burnout syndromes.
