摘要
We analyze two histological drawings of a multimodal text by Ramon y Cajal from 1888. Despite the interest aroused by their aesthetic qualities, to date they have not been the subject of semiotic analysis. Our theoretical framework is functional social semiotics (Kress & Leeuwen, 2006). Our hypothesis is that both drawings provide a naturalistic representation. We contextualize these drawings in the author's biography and in the scientific problems of his specialty at the time, and we try to reconstruct their elaboration. Our conclusion is that both drawings are composite and synthetic images controlled by scientific method and methodology and that they emphasize visual dissonance.
