Combination of hot plastic deformation and T6 heat treatment for enhancing mechanical properties of an A356 alloy

摘要
This study evaluates the relationship between solution heat treatment and hot plastic deformation before aging treatment and its effect on A356 alloys' mechanical properties and microstructural features. The study employed tensile tests, Vickers microhardness tests, and electron microscopy analysis. The results show that hot plastic deformation before the solution treatment leads to higher elongation, ultimate tensile stress, and yield strength values, which can be attributed to modifications in eutectic Si particles (spheroidisation, aspect ratio and roundness). On the other hand, hot plastic deformation after the solution treatment mainly affects the elongation of the alloy. This effect is due to the fracture of eutectic Si particles and the formation of cracks and voids between these particles, which facilitate crack nucleation. Thus, the combination of hot plastic deformation and subsequent solution treatment significantly improves the mechanical properties of the A356 alloy. The observed changes in microstructure and mechanical behaviour provide valuable insights for optimising the material's properties and refining an established process in the automotive wheel industry. Cette etude evalue la relation entre le traitement thermique de mise en solution et la deformation plastique a chaud avant le traitement de vieillissement et son effet sur les proprietes mecaniques et les caracteristiques microstructurales des alliages A356. L'etude a utilise des essais de traction, des essais de microdurete Vickers et une analyse par microscopie electronique. Les resultats montrent que la deformation plastique a chaud avant le traitement de mise en solution conduit a des valeurs plus elevees d'elongation, de resistance ultime a la traction et de limite d'elasticite, qui peuvent etre attribuees a des modifications des particules de Si eutectiques (spheroidisation, rapport d'aspect et rondeur). D'un autre cote, la deformation plastique a chaud apres le traitement de mise en solution affecte principalement l'elongation de l'alliage. Cet effet est du a la fissuration des particules de Si eutectiques et a la formation de fissures et de vides entre ces particules, ce qui facilite l'amorce de fissure. Ainsi, la combinaison de la deformation plastique a chaud et du traitement subsequent de mise en solution ameliore de maniere significative les proprietes mecaniques de l'alliage A356. Les changements observes dans la microstructure et le comportement mecanique fournissent des connaissances precieuses pour optimiser les proprietes du materiau et affiner un processus etabli dans l'industrie des roues automobiles.
