With recent developments in computational fluid dynamics, various computational methods have been proposed for the analysis of swimming microorganisms. While many excellent reviews on the hydrodynamics of microbial motion have been published, only a few have provided a comprehensive description of the computational methods themselves. This paper enumerates the characteristics of the computational methods proposed previously and discusses their strengths and weaknesses, to provide a guide in choosing the most appropriate method for a given purpose. Finally, we introduce recent computational studies and discuss future prospects in this field.
