DIABETIC COMPLICATIONS

The data on 117 new diabetics treated fromMarch 1 to August 30,1978 and 1,000 inpatientstreated from 1958 to 1977 show that the fre-quency of diabetic nephropathy,coronary heartdisease(CHD),diabetic retinopathy,cataract,peripheral neuropathy and cerebrovasculardisease is several times higher than previousdata reported in Shanghai.The data also showthat the frequency of diabetic microangiopathyin China is essentially the same as in westerncountries,with the exception of CHD andgangrene of the lower limbs.In 55 cases follow-ed up from 1963 to 1973,there is a close rela-tionship between the development and progressof retinopathy,nephropathy and the control ofdiabetes.
