Ten years after the defeat of the Brazilian football team against Germany in the semifinal of the 2014 World Cup by the score of 7 to 1, it is proposed to understand Brazilian society from the defeat in a football match. Through bibliographic research, and using as main reference the configurational sociology of Norbert Elias, it was sought to explore the reasons why soccer has been neglected by the human sciences, the importance of sport as a form of excitement in modernity and the way modern football has been developed, in a continuous process of rationalization. Locating the element of analysis and using the ideas present in Max Weber's theory, and in the concept of Cordial Man by S & eacute;rgio Buarque de Holanda, it is perceived that the concept of rationality associated with the transformation of soccer into business clashes with a social representation of soccer in Brazil, more prone to the individualism of dribbling than the collectivity of the assist. It can also be concluded that soccer is in a social configuration, that is, in a position of interdependence with other social spheres, such as politics and the media.
