Quarterly Scores List: Solo Works for Classical Guitar by Black Composers

This column has had a title change. The previous title was "Music Received," and it presented a comprehensive list of new music publications sent by publishers and distribu- tors. Those shipments decreased dramatically with the pandemic, and the editor began compiling short bibliographies for collection building. If an adequate number of items are received from publishers and distributors, the editor will compile a column following the pattern in previous "Music Received" columns. Given the irregularity of those columns, it seemed wise to create an umbrella title that could accommodate a variety of options. As such, the name has been changed to "Quarterly Scores List" with a subtitle determined by content. This column highlights solo works for the classical guitar by Black composers and ar- rangers throughout the African diaspora. The composers and arrangers featured in this column were uncovered using three websites: Dr. Ciyadh Wells & Neil Beckman's Guitar Music by Black Composers; Changing the Canon: A Collaboration with Black American Composers (Ex-Aequo Publishing), and the compiler's research, Black Classical Guitar: Classical Guitar in the African Diaspora. The compiler would like to acknowledge that this research began in Dr. Courtney-Savali Andrews' Afro-Classical Music Forum at the Oberlin Conser- vatory. This compilation presents one or more representative works for each composer. As some of the works are self-published, an email and/or personal website link has been listed as a point of contact when necessary, thereby assisting in selecting and ordering for libraries or personal collections. An asterisk * denotes a piece of music by a Black com- poser or musician whose music has been arranged for the classical guitar by an arranger not a part of the African Diaspora.
