Mucosal melanoma: A series of seven cases and review of literature

Background:Mucosal melanoma (MM) is the uncontrolled proliferation of melanocytes originating from the mucosal surface. MM is rare and comprises 0.3% of all cancers.Methods:We retrospectively analyzed records of 6582 cases who reported to our center from June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2022. Only seven cases of mucosal melanoma were found among them.Results:In this article, we have reported seven cases of mucosal melanoma that presented over a period of 5 years. A comparison of mucosal and cutaneous melanoma has been done.Conclusion:MM is an aggressive tumor with a dismal prognosis. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted and immunotherapy are various treatment options; however, prognosis remains less favorable as timely diagnosis is difficult.
