摘要
Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most prevalent urological conditions that affect aging men. Alpha-1 adrenergic receptor inhibition medications such as Tamsulosin treat the dynamic component of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a procedure for patients who meet relative or absolute indications for surgery. This study aims to investigate whether the administration of Alpha blocker prevents acute urinary retention in patients post-TURP. Methods: This is a randomized experimental study. The inclusion criteria include BPH patients and post-TURP procedures. A total of 60 Patients were divided into 2 groups: a tamsulosin group (30 patients) and a placebo group (30 patients). The urinary catheter was removed two days after the procedure. The patient followed up with an episode of urinary retention until seven days after the procedure. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0 for Windows. Results: There was 10% (3 of 30 patients) from the first group (Tamsulosin group) and 6.6% (2 of 30 patients) from the second group (placebo group) experienced urinary retention. Both patients from the second group experienced immediate acute urinary retention after the urinary catheter was removed. In the first group, the first patient experienced urinary retention on the fifth day, and the second and third patients experienced urinary retention on the seventh day. Conclusion: Administration of Alpha-blocker (Tamsulosin 0.4mg) had no significant benefit in preventing acute urinary retention in patients post-TURP.
