Activation and sleep control of the removable base station with setup time and delayed sleep period

摘要
For wireless communication networks (WCNs) with the removable base station (BS), activating the removable BS could improve the quality of service (QoS), while frequent activating and deactivating may incur huge costs. To achieve the tradeoff between costs and QoS, a four-threshold policy with response times to activate and deactivate the removable BS is proposed in this paper. Assuming that the arrival of data packets follows Poisson process and that the transmission time is exponentially distributed, we model the system through a vacation queue with setup time and delayed sleep period. Using the matrix-geometric solution, we obtain the stationary distribution and further derive the metrics for evaluating the performance. Consequently, we perform a sensitivity analysis on system parameters and develop a utility function for costs to determine the optimal thresholds. Through numerical experiments, we observed an interesting phenomenon: the activated removable BS continues transmitting until there are no data packets left in the queue. Additionally, compared to a system with two fixed BSs and a system that instantly activates and deactivates the removable BS, the system under the four-threshold policy has an advantage in minimizing total costs.
