Supervised neural networks have been successfully used for pattern recognition tasks in many fields of engineering because of their ability to generalize based on a training data set. The aim of our research work at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) is to develop an automated system, using the pattern recognition capabilities of artificial neural networks, for characterizing common pavement distress features like cracks, patches and potholes.
