摘要
A variety of structures is considered and designed for different load syStems, in wich the unloaded spans are assumed to be carrying either their dead load, or alternatively the dead load multiplied by a partial safety factor. Comparisons are drawn between the relative amounts of steel required and between the overload capacities achieved by these various designs. It is shown that using a factored dead load in design can lead to considerable reductions in safety.
