In the general case the determination of the stress-strain state of a structure having a nonlinear analytic model involves analysis of the solutions of the operator equation PHI ( chi , lambda ) equals 0 with various values and the parameter lambda . Since it is not normally possible to solve this equation exactly, it is usually reduced to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. Two approaches are outlined. Both are quite formal and make it possible to solve a wide range of flight vehicle structural mechanics problems associated with the geometric or physical nonlinearity of the structure, and also nonlinearity of the mechanical boundary conditions, the thermophysical characteristics of the material, and so on.
