The practicality of an innovative solid waste management system operated at a residential complex was evaluated during an 18-month monitoring program. This system, a pneumatic trash collection system, was the first installation of this type used for residential refuse collection in the United States. Additionally, the system was completely automatic, except for the final disposal of site refuse at a sanitary landfill. General evaluations of system performance were made in reference to reliability, maintainability, technical design, economy, acceptance by residents, and environmental factors. This paper investigated the ability of the system to comply with the design expectations in these areas.
