Increases in the number of long-term operating thermal power plants, the tendency toward intermediate and cyclic operation to meet changes in the electric power demand and supply situation, and requirements to develop higher temperature and higher pressure plants have led to increasing attention to the improved reliability of such plants. This paper presents factors which damage boiler pressure parts and some experiences of cracking or failure in boiler pressure parts, and reviews the status of the life prediction method, non-destructive defect inspection methods and non-destructive damage detection methods. Finally, concepts of the maintenance of boiler pressure parts and the related reliability evaluation technology to be improved and/or developed are presented.
