The reflection and transmission properties of fractal layers are investigated and characterized. Analytical and numerical results for plane waves incident upon Cantor bar fractal multilayers are found for various fractal dimensions and stages of growth. The self-similarity of the structure leads to a self-similar algorithm which provides the reflection and transmission coefficients for fractally distributed layers with extreme economy. The results of previous investigations by other authors are extended and generalized by considering oblique incidence of the electromagnetic wave as well as conducting materials for the fractal layers. Finally, a method for extracting fractal descriptors from scattering data is discussed.
