Data on strength properties of reaction-sintered silicon nitride ceramics are presented for atmospheric and neutral environment with temperatures amounting to 1400 degree C. Tests in the air at 800 degree C indicate a reduction in the ceramics strength. This is especially evident after a preliminary holding of specimens under load and manifests itself in active pre-critical crack growth. One of the main mechanisms of loss of strength at such temperatures for the ceramics in question is, supposedly, to be corrosion under stress caused by material oxidation.
