Effect of the nonlinear friction on the stability of servomechanisms with interferometric position sensors

A third- order system is analyzed. Formulas for calculating the coefficient of the harmonical linearization of the friction- caused nonlinearity are set up by piecewise linear approximation of the friction. An analysis is made of the characteristic equation describing the self- motion of the linearized system, and expressions are derived relating the system parameters, compensating elements and the friction to the smoothness of positioning.
