THE USE OF FERROGRAPHIC ANALYSIS IN CONJUNCTION WITH LIGHT AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY IS DESCRIBED FOR THE ELUCIDATION OF WEAR MECHANISMS TAKING PLACE IN OPERATING EQUIPMENT. EXAMPLES OF ADHESIVE WEAR, ABRASIVE WEAR, CORROSIVE WEAR, ROLLING ELEMENT FATIGUE, LUBRICANT BREAKDOWN, AND OTHER WEARMODES ARE ILLUSTRATED. IN ADDITION, THE USE OF MAGNETIC SOLUTIONS TO PRECIPITATE NONMAGNETIC DEBRIS FROM AQUEOUS AND NONAQUEOUS FLUIDS IS DESCRIBED.
