The Lingan Colliery produces 1. 5mt of coal each year from three advancing longwalls. The workings extend nearly eight kilometers beneath the Atlantic Ocean. In an attempt to control gob leakage, a monolithic packing trial was initiated in March 1985. The effect of the new packing method on both ventilation and strata control in the trial gateroad was monitored. This paper describes the packing trial, the results of the investigations and recent developments in monolithic packing.
