Extensive efforts have been made to commercialize an a-Si photoreceptor for application in a low-cost, small sized and high speed copy machine. Efforts have also been made to develop an intelligent copier using an a-Si photoreceptor in combination with a semiconductor laser diode and a microcomputer. This chapter reviews recent research trends in a-Si photoreceptors with emphasis on, (1) a technique for obtaining high deposition rate, (2) optimization of deposition conditions and doping level in a monolayered a-Si photoreceptor, (3) structural improvement of a multilayered a-Si photoreceptor and (4) improvement in long wavelength photosensitivity to cope with problems related to the semiconductor laser diode with the use of a-SiGe alloy. The start of the commercialization of an a-Si photoreceptor drum and copy machine is also described.
