摘要：
The two volumes of T.G. Carpenter's Environment Construction and Sustainable Development, pertaining to civil engineers, are discussed. The books encapsulate current thinking within the civil engineering discipline on environmental impact mitigation and implicitly explains the current limitations of the civil engineering approach in this field. The book describes sustainable development as a process of continual evolutionary change toward lifestyles that lie within the ecological carrying capacity and the greatest challenge before sustainable construction.
