Measurement of phase noise in signal generators

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the measurement of the phase characteristics of frequency sources. Two methods of measuring phase noise are presented, the quadrature and the fm discriminator methods. The calibration of each system is explained in terms of simple narrow band modulation theory and a minimum of mathematics is used throughout.
