SURFACE WORK-HARDENING OF HIGH-SPEED STEELS.

Results of investigations of the process of hardening high-speed steels R 18, R9K5, and R6M3 with the use of a diamond burnishing tool under a static load and the application of ultrasonic vibrations are presented. The investigation is conducted with the purpose of determining the optimal conditions for strengthening high-speed steels, leading to the best compromise between the mean arithmetical deviation of roughness R//a, and the microhardness HV of the surface layer.
