M’90) was born in Oc- tober 1962 in Jiang-su Province, P.R. China. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering in 1983,1986, and 1989 respectively, all from the Southeast University (formally the Nanjing Institute of Technology), P.R. China. From 1989 to 1991, he was an Assistant Professor at the National Lab of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1991, he has been a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Robotics and System Dynamics, German Aerospace Research Establishment, Oberphaffen-hofen. He received the Pattern Recogni- tion Prize (a Best Paper Award) from the German Pattern Recognition Association (DAGM) and the Austrian Pattern Recognition Association (OAGM) in 1994 for his work on shape from shading. His areas of interest include computer vision and neural networks;
