Optimal-control theories are applied to the design of feedback controllers for the excitation of a synchronous generator. For an optimal linear regulator design a suitable performance index and the weighing matrix Q must be chosen: a method is developed in this paper to determine Q in conjunction with a left shift of the dominant eigenvalues of the linearized state space model of the machine, as far as practical controllers permit. The improvement in the dynamic response of the power system with optimal controller compared to that of a conventional regulator is verified by simulation of a nonlinear model of the generator.
