It has been found experimentally that the ferrit-pearlite-banded structures are equivalent to the nonbanded ones as far as ductility (elongation, reduction of area) is concerned. Slightly lower figures in yield and ultimate strength are wholly explained to the coarser grain (possibly in combination with the softening effect of delayed cooling through the upper ferrite range); unfortunately, it has not been possible to develop distinctly banded and nonbanded structures with identical grain sizes. The results may still be taken as clearly proving that ferrite-pearlite banding per se is without discernible effect upon tensile properties, especially ductility, even for stress direction perpendicular to the plane of rolling.
