Present and future nutrient problems concerning the inner archipelago of Stockholm are discussed on the basis of a nutrient budget. Phosphorus and nitrogen turnover were studied for three water sections separately. It was found that about 60 percent of the total phosphorus entering the basin was retained in the inner basin. Only 40 percent of the nitrogen was retained in the inner basin. Nitrogen fixation became more moderate with increasing N:P ratios.
