Areas where the application of risk-based technologies to current US Coast Guard codes and specifications for improved/increased safety and reliability are identified. Codes and Specifications have been revised using risk-based technologies to provide more consistent levels of safety. It is based on well-understood physics/background technologies and supported by knowledge of the hazards and consequences of failure. The areas identified are: standards for the training and certification of watchstanders; transportation of hazardous materials; passenger vessel regulation and double-hulled tankers.
