This paper presents the types and design of cables and their classification according to their uses and the type of the reactor: BWR or PWR. IEEE Std 422-1977 Guide for the Design and Installation of Cable Systems in Power Generating Stations is outlined: its purpose; cable performance requirements; ampacity and derating; physical separation of medium voltage power, low-voltage power and control, and low-level signal cables; separation and identification of redundant cable systems; shielding and shield grounding; installation and handling recommendations; acceptance testing of cable systems; fire stops and raceway penetrations; fire protection systems; flame tests; and raceways. Class 1E cable systems design and installation is discussed separately. Some cable problems concerning electrical circuits are analyzed.
