Microhardness and wear resistance of surface-hardened synthetic sapphire crystals have been measured and compared with conventional sapphire crystals. To evaluate processed sapphire crystals for playback styli for discrete four-channel disk systems, wear tests have been conducted using the quality of reproduced sound as a criterion.
