Interatomic distances and atomic volumes are dictated by special features of interatomic interaction in different aggregate states of substances. A correlation of experimental data on the short interatomic distances in single-component melts of metals (r1e) and appropriate dimers (re) being in ground state is considered. A discrete distribution of ratio of r1e to re in liquid to equilibrium in ground state of dimer is obtained. The above distribution well correlates with distribution of elements by chemical bond type.
