Optical implementation of fundamental operations for binary image algebra

Some single-instruction multi-data (SIMD) flow calculations based on binary image transformation can be summed up binary image algebra (BIA) including five elementary images and three fundamental operations. It is of parallel processing characteristic which suits to optical processing. In this paper, on the basis of the three fundamental operations: dilation, union and complement and optical binary image algebra processor (OBIAP), a system, which consists of a multi-beam splitter (MBS), liquid crystal television (LCTV), two-dimensional detector array and microcomputer, is presented and analysed. It is of characteristics of simple structure, feedback processing and programmable operation. Its applications of digital image processing were also given.
