The concept of the so-called binding correction introduced by W. Brandt and coworkers is discussed. It is related to Bates' distortion approximation and the method of perturbed stationary states. The relation is illustrated by simple model calculations. It is shown that approximations based on perturbative treatment might become inadequate for nearly adiabatic behavior. A theoretical description of K-shell ionization in asymmetric very slow collisions is discussed. The binding effect on the L-shell ionization is more complex. An approximation scheme, termed Generalized Distortion Approximation is introduced. Model calculations are used to show the behavior expected in realistic studies of alignment and subshell distribution of L-shell vacancies.
