Sometimes extruders are used only for pumping out polymer that has been fed in the form of a melt. This should take place using the minimum amount of heat. It is shown that this requirement can be met only with compressionless screws whose efficiency, in terms of energy, reaches an optimum value at a pitch of 1D, flights of the correct depth, and the correct speed. An absolute optimum is possible only with extruders without transverse flow.
