A simple procedure has been developed for the determination of munitions present in water at levels as low as 0. 1 mu g/L. The method uses 60-80 mesh XAD-4 for extraction, followed by elution with 20 mL of ethyl acetate,. acetate, concentration of the eluate, separation by capillary GC, and detection using electron capture. Contrived and field samples containing nitrobenzene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, 2,4-dinitrotoluene, 2,6-dinitrotoluene, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), and 1,3,5-trinitrohexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) have been tested successfully.
